What to check before buying a used engine
The cheapest engine becomes expensive if it does not fit, lacks necessary accessories or repeats the failure that damaged the original engine.
Compatibility first
- Engine code and OEM specification
- VIN, build date and model variant
- Fuel system, emissions equipment and sensors
- Transmission pairing and drive configuration
- Mounts, sump, manifolds, wiring and ECU requirements
Evidence of condition
- Donor kilometres where documented
- Cold-start or running video where available
- Compression or leak-down information if supplied
- Oil and coolant condition
- Visible leaks, corrosion, broken mounts or damaged connectors
Clarify the sale
- Exactly which accessories are included
- Warranty period and exclusions
- Who pays labour or freight if there is a problem
- Return conditions and identification marks
- Whether delivery requires a forklift or commercial address
Protect the replacement
A qualified repairer should diagnose why the original engine failed. Cooling, lubrication, intake, fuel or electrical faults can damage the replacement if they are not corrected.
