What WOVI means in Queensland
A Written-off Vehicle Inspection (WOVI) is an identity inspection for a repairable write-off. It is not the same as a safety certificate and it does not erase the vehicle’s written-off history.
What the two inspections do
- A safety certificate inspection checks minimum vehicle safety standards.
- A WOVI checks the identity of the vehicle and the parts used in repairs, helping reduce stolen-part use and vehicle rebirthing.
- A repairable write-off generally needs both before it can be re-registered in Queensland.
What passing WOVI does not mean
Passing WOVI does not certify that every repair is perfect, does not make the vehicle equivalent to one with no write-off history, and does not remove the record. Queensland states that the vehicle remains on the written-off vehicle register and this may affect resale value.
Repairable versus statutory write-off
- A repairable write-off may be eligible for re-registration after required inspections.
- A statutory write-off cannot be re-registered in Australia.
- Some parts from statutory write-offs are restricted, including VIN-recording components and certain damaged, contaminated or recalled airbags.
Checks for a buyer
- Obtain a PPSR report
- Ask for repair and inspection records
- Arrange an independent mechanical and body inspection
- Confirm insurance before purchase
- Consider future resale value
