How to identify left-hand and right-hand car parts
Automotive left and right are normally determined from the driver’s perspective while sitting in the vehicle and facing forward—not while standing in front of the car.
The basic rule
- LH means the vehicle’s left side when facing forward from inside.
- RH means the vehicle’s right side when facing forward from inside.
- In Australia, the driver side is usually RH and the passenger side is usually LH.
Do not rely on driver side alone
Listings from overseas may describe driver and passenger sides differently because the steering position changes. LH and RH are less ambiguous when used correctly.
Confirm with physical details
- Mirror image shape and mounting tabs
- Connector direction and wiring length
- Part-number suffixes
- Airbag, seatbelt or sensor location
- Photos showing the part in its installed orientation
Best wording when ordering
Send: vehicle year, make, model, VIN, exact position, LH or RH, OEM number and photos of your original part.
